Jared Sims: Analogy of the Sun

CD celebration concert for Jared Sims’ new release, “Analogy of the Sun.” All the compositions being performed are written by Jared and feature an all-star Pittsburgh band including Reggie Watkins on trombone, Alton Merrell on piano, Jeff Grubbs on bass and David Throckmorton on drums. The music is challenging, diverse and swingin’; exploring Jared’s playing on the baritone sax as well as the flute.

Howie Alexander Trio

Pittsburgh pianist Howie Alexander was selected as one of the ensemble leaders for the MCG Jazz Musicians Performance Fund last spring when the pandemic first hit the US. This concert captures the new music that Howie and the trio created as the fund’s project. The evening of original music and new arrangements of familiar tunes is supported by fellow Pittsburghers Glyn Loyd on bass and James Johnson, III on drums.

Smithsonian Jazz Sextet: Tribute to the Poll Winners

This concert features music from Milt Jackson, Max Roach, Barney Kessel, Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Cannonball Adderley, and others. All of whom were annual Downbeat Magazine “Poll Winners” in the 1950s and 1960s. Each musician in the sextet narrates a brief historical context for their instrument and musical selection.

Bob James & Howard Paul

A true once-in-a-lifetime evening of music that showcases two emerging, extremely talented guitarists Lucian Gray and Leandro Pellegrino. These two musicians are destined to become household names. Piano Jazz Legend Bob James and Benedetto Guitars CEO, Howard Paul, often perform together. For this concert, we paired them with two of Pittsburgh’s finest musicians Paul Thompson on bass and James Johnson, III on drums. The music ranges from standards to some Bob James classic hits. The evening created the opportunity for Bob to be able to stretch out and show off his amazing improvising skills.

PJO with special guest Hubert Laws

A special Jazz Appreciation Month concert from April 2016 premiered six songs from NEA Jazz Master Hubert Law’s repertoire arranged for the 17-piece Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra. While some of the arrangements were based on early Hubert Laws recordings, a couple - by Mike Tomaro - were created specifically for the occasion. This book of music went on to be used for the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra’s World tour “Jazz Beyond Borders” that featured Hubert Laws as Original concert date Saturday, April 2, 2016 guest soloist.
