Hollywood Theatre-Sponsored Project

Char Hutson and Emily Sterling are documentary film makers from Portland, Oregon who believe in the critical importance of arts education in the schools. We are both artists and educators working with at risk youth in the school system. We know the power of the arts in our own lives. We also know the power that the arts can have to help a child express himself, strengthen self identity, and process the difficulties of adolescence and life. In November 2012, we learned that only 18% of Portland public students had an art teacher in their schools, compared to 83% nationally. We were shocked and outraged, so we started filming and following the story of the controversial arts tax, 26-146, that would fund arts educators in Portland Public Schools. Since then, we have continued to follow the issue and document the reintroduction of arts education back into the schools.
