Refuge explores an embattled American West, where struggles over land and identity climax in the 2016 armed takeover of Oregon’s Malheur National Wildlife Refuge—while revealing a growing grassroots counter-movement toward the “radical center” of hope for a new and resilient ecosystem. The 41-day Refuge takeover and violent death of occupation participant LaVoy Finnicum polarizes Harney County. We wonder if new assaults will sideline community healing and efforts to find lasting solutions. But in a new frontier of cooperation, a handful of individuals and groups forges a fragile trust around the Refuge—crown jewel on the Pacific Flyway, homeland to the Burns Paiute Tribe and centered within a multi-generational ranching community.
