Description

The film explores Mackie's unique upbringing, his cherished inner circle, and the familial surprises that have contributed to the optimism and audacity present in his work. These personal elements shed light on the creative force behind his legendary designs.

As the film is fully authorized, Quixotic Endeavors was granted access to Mackie's meticulously kept archive, filled with rare and unseen artifacts, including outfits that never made the final cut. The documentary captures the over-the-top costumes as they progress from sketch to stage, showcasing the intricate detailing of sequins and beads. Highlights include the soon-to-be-lost art methods employed by old-world artisans, which help make each of Mackie's outfits something to behold and remember.

The feature includes original interviews with Bob Mackie's clients and collaborators, along with individuals he has inspired—designers, stylists, comedians, and actors. Mackie himself offers a first-person account of his most iconic creations, from The Carol Burnett Show's "Startlett O'Hara" dress to Cher's famous 1986 Academy Awards® feathered headdress, and Tina Turner's iconic concert costumes. Interviews with stars such as Cher, Pink, Tom Ford, Miley Cyrus, RuPaul, and Carol Burnett further highlight the timeless influence of this peerless costume designer.
